Common Burn-injury Complications

Burn injuries can cause some of the most devastating injuries to a person. While the injuries are instantaneous, they can nonetheless develop in time. When a person has suffered burn-related injuries, he or she can face a multitude of complications. This article will cover some of the most common types of burn injury complications.

Burn-Related Injuries: Facing Bodily Complications

When a person has been injured due to a burn, he or she can face difficulties that could range from temporary to severe and permanent. The following is a limited list of bodily complication a person can face if he or she has been burned:

  • Infections
    • When a person has suffered a burn injury, it is likely that there is broken and sensitive skin. This open wound can easily harbor bacteria as well as other sorts of viruses. While a burn can seem minor or small, it is still highly recommended that the person seek medical attention for the wound. A minor wound could have devastating consequences due to an infection.
  • Blood loss
    • Generally, most burns will not result in blood loss. Unless the burn is catastrophic, a burn can have little to no effect on a person’s cardiovascular system. When a burn has been caused by third degree burns or higher or has otherwise been induced by chemical burns, a victim can need blood transfusions.
  • Entering into Shock
    • When a person enters into shock, this can quickly result in death. Shock could manifest in different forms. The most common types of shock include: septic shock, anaphylactic shock, cardiogenic shock, or hypovolemic shock.
    • Shock is a very dangerous medical condition. If you have reason to believe that a person has entered into shock, call 9-1-1 immediately.
  • Loss of Bodily Functions or Mobility
    • A burn can leave a victim with lifelong consequences as well and one of the most common is the loss of bodily functions or mobility. When a burn occurs, it will usually leave the skin tissue scared. This can lead to continuous and lifelong pain as well as the inability to fully move the limb.

Burn-Related Injuries: Facing Economic Complications

Having physical impairments in the aftermath of a burn-related injury is not the only complication a victim could face. Victims also face financial and economic downturns. The following are some of the most common economic complications a person could face in the aftermath of a burn-related injury.

  • Loss of Work
    • Many victims are left with the inability to return to work. Whether this is for a temporary amount of time or is otherwise permanent, the inability to work will always result in financial struggles.
  • Medical Costs
    • Additionally, victims to burn-related injuries will also face high medical costs. The need for medical care as well as medical therapy can be costly. Due to the uncertainty of these types of injuries, medical care has the potential to last months and even many years.
